Poor Women’s Angel --- Muhammad Yunus

Since long time I wanted to read about this man “Muhammad Yunus” to get the very idea of being a successful man in helping a co-human being. Yesterday night I googled his name and found many interesting links about him, as its being middle of the working week I was not able to go through them however I kept them book marked. Just an hour back I quickly opened the saved data and started reading his biography and watched his lecture given at University of California, San Diego, and I could not resist from writing after watching this video.

Muhammad Yunus born in East Pakistan (Now called Bangladesh) completed his BA and MA degrees from Dhaka University and later did his PhD in economics from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He is well know to the world as the founder of the Grameen Bank and the winner of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize

A economic lecturer who was disturbed by seeing the suffering of the poor villagers during the 1974 drought in Bangladesh, He had seen the suffering of the people from the cruel and heartless money lenders and thought of bring change in their lives, along with his student went around the villages and performed a statistics of the amount of money the people had borrowed from the money lender, to his surprise he found out the money to be just 27 dollars, he had repaid the money to the lender’s from his own pocket and started a new era.

Here are some highlights:

He convinced the bank to lend money to the poor by giving his property as the security assurance
He became successful with his idea of making Women as prime customers of the Grameen Bank
There are over 7 and half million customers to Grameen bank and 90% of them are women
In order to start a bank, The Grameen bank just gives the address of the village to the bank manager, that’s it! No money…. The manager contacts the local villagers and collects the deposit amounts (Villager’s savings) and starts lending people out of that money
Most of the branches had achieved to reach the break even point in just 12 months
The main success points for this bank are “No Security assurance required” , “No Legal instruments” (Legal dept and Lawyers)
Qualifications to get a loan --- If a family living in a house with a leaking roof they are given the priority or for a family staying in a single room house its considered as the criteria for eligibility to take a loan….. J
Grameen bank works with 16 decision rules and the top priority rule is, that the customer should send their children to school
Grameen bank is giving 30,000 Scholarships to school children
18,000 students are offered student loans for their graduation
There are 2 PhD holders who came from the poor families making their studies possible with the Grameen bank schemes
Grameen bank lended loans to beggars and changed many of their lives to small scale entrepreneurs

Poor --- Is not the quality of poor
“If you plant a seed in a pot it rises to a small plant, if you plant the same seed in earth it will become a big tree”, all the children are born with great potential, it’s the chance and opportunity we (the society) give the child to grow makes the difference
A charity dollar would end up there itself, however a social business dollar forms a cycle and changes many lives

Is it not a great example for a change, a single human being can bring, if he/she thinks of other being with a simple heart and thought to help the co-living being?

I would like to present few facts that I had spent some time in collecting regarding our earth and we the Humans behavior towards it, Please spend 5 mins of your time

• The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies

• Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier.

• Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss.

• Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting

• Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, suffered the worst bleaching—or die-off in response to stress—ever recorded in 1998, with some areas seeing bleach rates of 70 percent. Experts expect these sorts of events to increase in frequency and intensity in the next 50 years as sea temperatures rise.

• An upsurge in the amount of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, heat waves, and strong tropical storms, is also attributed in part to climate change by some experts.

A Meaningful and Serious Conversation

It’s always I enjoy Charlie Rose interviews, they are really productive and brings out quality answers which we can rely on. Now its one of his interviews with Sarah Chayes, A former NPR Correspondent.

From this talk it proves, the difference between a person who's talking about an issue just by listening the facts from someone or by watching news in the media and a person who is actually having the genuine experience with the issue, I am happy to see an American talking about the Afghan people situation and their present state with understanding their actual problems by being part of their day to day life.

The whole 17 mins video had given me lot of satisfaction, it filled me up with lot of knowledge in understanding the situations in Afghan, and some of the moments in the interview are really fantastic...

When Charlie asked a question “Does the things which you are proposing, does they happen in Karzai Government?" She responded “Are we serious?" that’s truly amazing!

As she was explaining about US, she made a very good point that "US should stop implementing the 20th century strategies in the 21st century, by dividing the nations as US favored Nations and Nations against US."

The words she used to describe herself "Boundary Crosser" I think those are the apt words which suits her best!

One on One with Nasiruddin Shah

As a part of my Sunday drive through into the YouTube, I came across the One on One interviews by Riz Khan, I started watching his interview with Russell Peters and then Nasiruddin Shah. I liked his way of interviewing, the questions were just to the point and not much aggressive with any of the subject lines, and one of the things which I observed with him is his strong Irish English accent.

Coming to Nasiruddin Shah, everybody says he is a great actor and however I always cannot judge the acting skills much, so I just follow the people's opinion and consider him a great actor. Today after watching this interview I felt he got the quality in him and he seems to me as a person who is strong at his basic concepts and able to watch his feelings from time to time.

During the interview few words of Nasiruddin Shah, surprised me and they are really thought provoking for example when he was asked about his experience on his Hollywood film "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" he replied “Its boring". This has really amazed me, I had seen this first of its kind, a Bollywood actor not reacting much for a Hollywood chance and not much bothered to appreciate it over and over again. Generally when we see some one telling his true feelings about a topic in a straight forward way, which the general crowd not much used to it, starts commenting and gives a disagreeable feedback, which is relatively common in every field, However for a moment if we try to observe the sense of the statement, we can see a different way of understanding which I feel is much closure to the truth rather than the impression which I acquired from repeatedly hearing from huge mob.

Its really interesting to watch a politician answering an expert, It’s a live show running and he could not able to get to the point where he himself cannot appease himself with his answers and if he is a true human, He shall regret internally for sure to his acts which caused a great amount of loss to people lives who are ignorant of what’s happening at the backend when the so called leaders signing those papers which impacts very less to the people who voted for him and more to his personal revenues.

As a member and regular visitor of the rendezvous blog, I used to enjoy reading and leaving a comment on the articles written by my friends however today after going through the article written on Andrew Bacevich by Sarat, and after watching Bill Moyers’s interview with Andrew Bacevich it inspired me to write few lines, it was really a happy feeling to see someone talking about so called “Open Secrets” – everybody knows it however none dares to speak to the core.

It was really thought provoking, the way he discussed about the imperial policies, the actual meaning of war, what war means to the general public and the present financial crisis. I am really impressed and my respect for Jimmy Carter had increased after knowing about his speech on July 15^th 1979 which I came to know through their talk.

A world would be a great place to live if we have leaders with vision comings from the group who belives that "there is no alternative for hardwork" and who choose to go in the way which brings light in people’s lives.

We are lucky to have People like Bill Moyers who bring out quality journalism, and I would like to appreciate and thank Sarat for bringing out and sharing these good articles which would have been a tough job searching myself.

Finally I would like to thank Andrew for sharing his experiences, views and point blank approach on current situations. I am proud to see that there are many wonderful people in this world who still thinks about co-human beings and their problems genuinely. May god bring peace in life of Andrew and his family.

Krugman was born on February 28, 1953, in Long Island, New York state, the United States.

He earned a Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1997 and has been professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton University since 2000.

He has also taught at Yale University, the London School of Economics, Stanford, and MIT.

Krugman, 55, is well known in academia for his work in trade theory and his textbook explanations of currency crises and New Trade Theory.

In an article published in 1991, he developed the concepts about economic geography into a comprehensive theory of location of labor and firms.

"Paul Krugman has formulated a new theory to answer a series of questions, such as what the effects of free trade and globalization are and what the driving forces behind worldwide urbanization are," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

Krugman's work has thereby integrated the previously disparate research fields of international trade and economic geography, the statement said.

"By having shown the effects of economics of scale on trade patterns and on the location of economic activity, Krugman's theory have given rise to an extensive reorientation of the research on these issues."

He is an ardent critic of the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush and its domestic and foreign policies.

He has also written 20 books and more than 200 papers in professional journals.

Winning the Nobel award won't change his approach to research and writing, Krugman told a news conference in Stockholm by telephone from the United States.

"The prize will enhance visibility, but I hope it does not lead me into going to a lot of purely celebration events, aside from the Nobel presentation itself," he said.

Besides his work as an economist at Princeton University in New Jersey, Krugman also writes a regular column in The New York Times and has a blog called "Conscience of a Liberal."

Recent days I had seen many ad’s on Movie Vanaja esp. on Google sites like Gmail, orkut etc… with built in curiosity I had clicked one of those links and was directed to Vanajathefilm.com I had gone through various areas in the sites and came to know little bit about the story line of the film and also about the crew and the site also provided photographs and little where abouts of the film maker Rajnesh.

After going through Rajnesh’s profile, photos and some of his works, its seems to be good reading about a techno entering into films which it happened to see very usual these days comparing the growth rate of these types of personalities in the societies. I guess may be only the starters and amateurs of any fields enjoy that attention and which will be faded off with increase in the people in that area.

I just finished by breakfast and got back to work, then my cell started making that funny noise again which these days I don’t feel like paying any interest to, However it is Mavayya and without any delay I answered the call and we started discussing about Abhinav Bindra and felt really happy about his achievement, then it was Bindu mama calling and I told mavayya about it and switched to her call, as usual we started our funny conversation which always starts with “Emi Aieepooyav”, pointing fingers on each other and finally compromised J , Then she told me that I want to tag you and I forgot to mention that at the end of my blog, so as per her words I came to know that it’s a formal invitation for me to pen down few answers for couple of questions. I was going through an article and it made me think about the way movie music associated with my life, Since my childhood I ‘m a great music lover, Even some of my elder family members say that I used to sing at age of 2, and still one of my uncle and sister calls me “Jr Ghantasala” LOL !!!!

It was a BPL Sanyo Tape Recorder which has entertained my whole childhood, later Aiwa walkman which Govind Mavayya brought from US, then came my Philips CD Disc Man which Prasad Anna brought from Australia, later for couple of years I started playing music in my Desktop, Now came my Apple I’ pod (Once again thanks to Govind Mavayya :) ) and my Laptop. A selected song will be playing repeatedly until I feel that I can no more tolerate it, however over a period of time when I come across a song from this once repeated list gives fragrance of the past.

I change my music according to my mood and sometimes music takes hold of my mood and it changes accordingly, When I hear a certain sounds of music my mind jus takes me away to past moments and I can see flashes of happened scenes or people in my Life, and it made me think that may be Human brain associate few memories with music and my guess work was right (http://clearinghouse.missouriwestern.edu/manuscripts/230.asp)

A Heartfelt Hug ....

There are numerous ways of expressing love to a co-living being and hugging is one among it. It gives me a great feeling when I hug someone with love, a genuine hug imprints deep in the memory and I’ll be so much refreshed when I recollect them and it makes me feel that this world is filled up with many wonderful people.

I had observed that we hug mostly when we meet someone or when it’s time to depart and also at times filled up with emotional touch where you sense that the other person really loves you and care about you. I still remember those moments of my childhood where my uncles and grandparents used to give me a big hug when they visit my home and also I remember those moments when I used to feel so sad when someone leaving after their visit , I used to hug them and used to request them to stay back. Even as a grown up I still remember my last days in School, Inter and Engineering which are filled up with hugging friends and some stayed as last hugs as I did not get an opportunity to meet them again. Even after started working I am fortunate to meet many wonderful people and made huge list of friends.

Few months back when I moved to states, I remember those moments filled up with huge hugs from my family member’s esp.… from my parents, I can still see my mother with heavy eyes filled with tears and very soon those moments are once again carried out when I reached Los Angeles airport, my Uncle’s family welcomed me with hefty hugs and loud cheers.

I find happiness and pleasure in making others happy and I believe this world would be a better place when we are able to sense a hidden small thing called humanity and able to live and let live. Just feeling concern, No big secret… No big rocket science…

“Dr. Q” has a theory about how to cure cancer that he can’t wait to tell me.

I look around at his lab assistants, their faces a rainbow of colors — intense, smart, listening. Their parents come from many parts of the world. Dr. Q has chosen them to test his theory: that a team of scientists from a diversity of backgrounds might find a cure for cancer more quickly, because each would see the problem differently.

The lab at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore we’re all gathered in belongs to Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa — “Dr. Q.” He is one of the best brain surgeons in the world, but two decades ago, his hands were picking vegetables for $22 a day. Quinones was a migrant worker, living under an old camper top in the middle of a California field.

“Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep thinking, ‘What am I doing here?’ ” Quinones recalls. “I have a cousin who told me, ‘You're never going to be anything but a migrant worker the rest of your life.’ But it just ignited this fire in my belly.”

He learned dozens of jobs, with a blazing desire to be the best at whatever life offered. It was Dr. Joe Martinez Jr. who steered him toward medicine. “Alfredo came to work in my lab his senior year at the University of California at Berkley," Martinez recalls. “He knew nothing about the brain, but learned at an amazing rate. He was one of the two best students I ever taught.”

Quinones studied math and science because he didn't have to write perfect English to do well at them. Martinez told him that with his grades, he should try for one of the very best medical schools in the country. He made it to Harvard and graduated at the top of his class.

“I think what drives Alfredo is fear,” Martinez says. “Fear of failure.”

“It's OK to be afraid,” Quinones says. “Because you know what happens when you're afraid? You work like crazy. One thing that this country absolutely, absolutely values is hard work.” And that's what he tells kids who wonder whether they can beat overwhelming odds too.

Now Dr. Q breezes into a patient’s room. “Aww-right! Here's my team!” he shouts. His medical students gather around the bed. Quinones teaches them to treat all patients as friends, reminding them: “Don't forget the human side.”

And Quinones tries to remember that himself. Like his patients, he has had more than his share of uncertainty and tears in his life. Many nights his mother had no food for the table because his father lost the family's gas station in Mexico. “He used to tell me, ‘If you wanna be like me for the rest of your life, don't go to school,’ ” Quinones says.

Heeding his father’s warning, Quinones graduated college at 18. He became a teacher, but found that, like his father, he was not earning enough.

So, on his 19th birthday, he clawed to the top of a 16-foot fence and jumped — illegally — to an uncertain future here in the U.S. “All I wanted to do was come in, make a little bit of money, send it back to my parents,” he says.

I ask Quinones how he feels about illegal immigration today. Should we build walls? Should we keep illegal immigrants out of our schools?

“Can we build walls?” he asks rhetorically. “Sure, we're gonna build walls. Can we make ’em taller? Sure, we can make ’em taller. Would that be a solution? As long as there's poverty, and as long as people are dying of hunger in other places, it's human nature. They will try to find better ways.”

Ironically, the brain surgeon followed his heart, not his brain: He became a U.S. citizen rather than return to Mexico a hero. He felt he owed this country for all the opportunity it had given him.

So now, each evening, as other doctors head home, Quinones goes to his lab, looking for clues in the brain tumors he's taken out.

“What if you never find the cure for brain cancer?” I ask.

“It doesn't matter whether you're successful or not,” answers Quinones. “What matters is that you give the world the best, and the best will come back to you.”

I think the first and fore most thing to be taught is to learn and teach oneself, yes one’s own self.

Learn about yourself, observe and see what you are, what your capabilities are, how you are responding to different situations, check what your likes and dislikes are…

Check yourself how much amount of fear you have… Be honest to yourself with this… Now once you are able to know about your fear, immediately you need to start killing that fear, which is our main enemy. It could be fear of darkness, failure, insult, loosing name and fame…… any sort of fear… KILL IT!!!

How to kill Fear? As soon as you figured out your fear give yourself different scenarios, virtually place yourself in that fearful situation again and again imagine your self suffering… yes suffer …feel the pain… if in case required DIE but say yourself I am not Afraid !!! Repeat this process until you know your state honestly that you had killed your fear and you are no more afraid of anything…. Let anything happen you are no way concerned about it you are not afraid of it, you will help yourself to get out of it because If you honestly say that I had killed my fear then you know yourself how to face any kind of situation which earlier you felt fearful…

Now comes our second enemy--- Laziness. Come on now from the very moment you realize it… start killing it!!! Yes you have to kill it!!! Show no mercy!!! Kill that damm ugliest thing in the world which has started living with you and making your life miserable… Every time it comes out just start chopping it out into pieces… Put your maximum force to damp it down to the earth and see your self raising high… Now put your hand on your hip and see that laziness dying at your feet and enjoy your victory by doing what you thought of doing.

Now eradicating these you have a great amount of success, now bring up your hard work, and divert all your energy to achieve. It could be anything in your life…

I do not know about rebirth, I am running short of time, every morning feel and be grateful that you are alive and seeing a brand new day… Utilize it to your fullest!!!

Have patience … Think perfectly… YES I truly mean it “perfectly”… Have a healthy thought!

Aggressive??? No not at all… you proved it…and it is working…

State of Depression !!!

Life is a journey and we need to go on…. I would like to compare our daily journey moods with different roads……Sometimes we will come across broad & wide roads, narrow roads, busy roads, roads filled up with potholes, lonely roads filled up with nature beauty………….

Somehow I feel like comparing the state of depression as journeying on log which is placed on the stream to cross which you do not like to move on….

When you are crossing the stream on a log…..

1. You will be going though that even though you are terrible afraid

2. You cannot move forward easily

3. Even though you know that you need to go on the other end you will struggle to cross and you cannot pass forward easily, sometimes blaming yourself for choosing that path or your fate etc.,

4. Your thinking will be so narrow that you cannot think any thing other than your state and about a bright moment where you end up this path and you land on the safe ground.

5. At times you may think I cannot do that and I want to go back

6. if that log is not enough to carry a single person, Sometimes a person trying to help you genuinely in that stage may cause harm, if he tries to come along with you to help you pass that stage, the log may not help and it may break which may end up in more worst situation

7. Or a person who is on the other side who had already crossed it may help you by his guidance

8. And lastly there may be a chance that you will enjoy that stage J

So when ever a stage of depression occurs, we may or may not help the other person. Sometimes he/she themselves can sort out the things and comes out with a broad smile. After going through the journey it really teaches you a lot, it tests your patience, intelligence, social relations…. The rest of the journey would be good if we can able to learn something out of it. It would be really easy to cross the same kind of path for second time compared to the first if we really realize the situation.

I really feel happy if people do not go through this stage, and I learnt that I can do nothing if they go through it, other than extending a helping hand when they really ask for….

There will be a bright sunshine after a deadly storm !!!
